The Theatre of the Oppressed (I25-EN)

Description

The Theatre of the Oppressed is a method for social change through which we transform individuals and society. It is a form of popular, community-based education that uses theatre as a tool for social change at the individual, local and global level. These are performances where the audience is actively involved in the performance. These performances, however, deal with everyday issues that arise from everyday situations. On this basis, we can change the thinking and actions of individuals and society. The founder of the Theatre of the Oppressed, Augusto Boal, who relied on the Freire's (op. Paulo Freire) pedagogy of the oppressed and the epic theatre of Brecht repeatedly said that the Theatre of the Oppressed was an exercise in revolution and an exercise in life. As Europe is confronted with a large number of migrants and refugees, the theatre actively involves them in their performances. Their daily experience of the new environment may also be our awakening. In this colourful script

Aims

The experience of theatre provides the basis for the experience of meeting the actor and spectator. It puts us in the realm of action, where through the narrative of the oppressed we can test how we might react in a given situation in which we are oppressed, or merely improve our response to a given situation. The Theatre of the Oppressed gives voice to those who lack it. It talks about things that are not often talked about. It is primarily a political theatre. The purpose of theatre is therefore to connect, understand, and engage in the role of those whom, in one way or another, in our daily lives, we deny human rights, the rights of a developed Western society.
